Chevrolet Car Key Replacement Cost in Arlington TX (2026)

What does a Chevrolet car key cost in Arlington?
As of October 2026, a Chevrolet car key cut and programmed at your vehicle in Arlington costs $160 to $520 on most models. A plain transponder key is the low end, a flip key with a built-in remote is the middle, and a push-to-start proximity fob is the top. Three things set the number: the key hardware, the security generation behind it, and whether a working key is still in your hand. Call or text (817) 646-7134 with the model and year for a flat price before anyone is dispatched.
Chevrolet is the second most common badge we make keys for in Arlington, and it is the make where the security system changed the most over the years. A 2004 Silverado, a 2014 Cruze and a 2024 Tahoe have almost nothing in common behind the key. That history is what the price is made of.
Four Chevrolet security generations
PassLock. On a number of older Chevrolets there is no chip in the key at all. The security sensor lives inside the ignition lock cylinder and checks that the cylinder was turned by a key instead of forced. The key is a plain cut blade. Key replacement is cheap. The catch is that when PassLock fails, a new key does nothing, because the key was never the part being checked.
PassKey III and III+. The key carries a transponder chip, and the vehicle reads it when you turn the ignition. These are the keys with the small circle-plus mark on the blade. Locks are worked by a separate remote. This generation covers a long run of Silverado, Tahoe, Impala and Malibu years.
Flip key. Blade, chip and remote in one folding unit. Camaro, Equinox, Cruze, Malibu, Sonic, Trax and Impala all used one, and base-trim Silverados still do. It is two registrations in one housing, the chip for the engine and the remote for the locks.
PEPS proximity fob. GM's name for push-to-start. The fob stays in your pocket. Most current Chevrolets use it, and on the newest trucks and SUVs it sits on GM's latest electrical architecture, which changes how security access works.
If you are not sure which you have, the same test applies as on any make. A key you insert and turn is one of the first three. A button on the dash is PEPS.
Chevrolet key cost in Arlington by model
These are the figures this site already publishes for Chevrolet key work in Arlington, gathered into one table. Every number is mobile work at your vehicle.
| Chevrolet model | Key type | Spare key (working key present) | All keys lost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silverado, turn-key years | Transponder blade key | $140 - $250 | $220 - $420 |
| Silverado, flip-key trims | Flip key with remote | $160 - $290 | $220 - $420 |
| Silverado, push-to-start trims | Proximity smart fob | $190 - $380 | $220 - $420 |
| Equinox, 2010 - 2017 | Transponder or flip key | $150 - $240 | $260 - $420 |
| Equinox, 2018 - 2026 | PEPS smart key | $220 - $340 | $340 - $560 |
| Tahoe, turn-key years | Transponder key, cut and programmed | $120 - $260 | $220 - $420 |
Malibu, Cruze, Impala, Camaro, Traverse, Trax, Trailblazer, Blazer, Colorado, Suburban and Bolt are quoted inside the same $160 to $520 Chevrolet band by key type. A flip-key Cruze or Malibu lands with the flip-key rows above. A push-to-start Traverse, Blazer or late Malibu lands with the PEPS rows. One question about the year settles which.
Two smaller jobs sit below that table. Programming a fob you already own falls in the $80 to $220 key fob programming band. And if your only problem is a worn housing on a flip key that still starts the car, the flip key replacement cost guide explains when a new shell is enough.
For the model-level detail, see the Silverado key replacement guide and the Equinox key replacement guide. GMC shares the same systems and the same band, and the GMC Sierra smart key guide covers the truck twin.
Which key each Chevrolet usually takes
As a working guide for the Chevrolets we see around Arlington:
- Silverado. No chip in the key on the early 2000s trucks, a transponder key through the next generation, then a flip key on work trims and a proximity fob on upper trims from the 2019 redesign.
- Tahoe and Suburban. Transponder key with a separate remote on older trucks, proximity fob with push-to-start on the newer generations.
- Equinox. Flip key or transponder key through 2017, PEPS proximity from 2018.
- Malibu and Impala. Transponder keys early, flip keys in the middle years, proximity on the latest generation.
- Cruze, Sonic and Trax. Flip key on most, with proximity on some upper trims.
- Camaro. Flip key on the fifth generation, proximity fob on the sixth.
- Traverse and Blazer. Proximity fob on the current generations.
- Colorado. Turn-key on the previous generation, proximity on the current one.
Trim packages moved these lines from year to year. The ignition in front of you is the only thing that settles it.
What changes the price of a Chevrolet key
Whether a working key exists
With a working key in hand, adding another is a spare-key job and sits in the left-hand column. With none, it is all keys lost and sits in the right. On the 2018-and-newer Equinox that is the difference between $220 to $340 and $340 to $560 for the same fob on the same car. Our spare car key cost guide runs that comparison across every key type.
The GM security timer
This is the part that is specific to GM, and it surprises people.
On the PassKey generations, a vehicle with no working key goes through a relearn made of three ten-minute cycles before it accepts a new one. The technician is not being slow. The vehicle is counting. On newer systems the wait happens during security access instead, and it is shorter, but it is still there.
With one working key present, most of that wait disappears, which is another reason the spare is the cheaper job.
Note: A shop that promises an all-keys-lost Chevrolet in fifteen minutes is describing a different vehicle. The security timer is built into the car, and the honest quote includes it.
The newest GM architecture
GM's latest electrical architecture arrived on the 2021 Tahoe and Suburban and the refreshed 2022 Silverado, and has spread through the range since. It encrypts more of the traffic between modules and ties key programming to online security access. The work is still done on-site. It needs current equipment and takes longer, and that is why the same proximity fob costs more to add to a 2023 truck than to a 2016 one. The truck key replacement cost guide covers how this compares against Ford and Ram.
The key hardware
Transponder, flip, proximity. Each step up adds part cost. The transponder key programming band of $140 to $280 and the smart key programming band of $220 to $550 are the two service bands every Chevrolet key falls into.
Whether the fob is new
Many GM proximity fobs lock to the first vehicle they are programmed to. A used fob from an online marketplace may look perfect and still refuse to program. A used flip key has a better chance if the chip and frequency match, but the blade has to be cut new either way. The online key fob programming cost guide shows how to check before buying.
How many keys you want
The second key on the same visit costs less than the first, because the vehicle is already connected and the security wait has already been served.
When the problem is not the key
Chevrolet has more "it looks like a key problem" faults than any other make we work on, and knowing them saves money.
Security light on, engine starts and stalls. On PassLock vehicles this is the classic sensor failure in the ignition cylinder. No key fixes it. On transponder vehicles it can be the key, the reader around the ignition, or the module. Our guide to a car that starts then dies walks through telling them apart.
Key turns but nothing happens. Often the electrical switch behind the cylinder. That is ignition repair, and the ignition repair cost guide prices it by symptom.
Key will not turn. Worn key, worn cylinder, or a loaded steering lock. The Tahoe ignition repair guide covers the GM truck version of that fault.
Fob stopped working after a battery change in the car. Covered in our guide to a key fob not working after a car battery replacement.
It is also worth one minute to check for open recalls by VIN on the NHTSA recalls page. GM has run ignition-related recalls in the past, and recall work is done by the dealer at no charge.
Chevy locksmith versus Chevy dealer in Arlington
The cross-make comparison this site publishes puts a basic transponder key at $140 to $280 mobile against $300 to $600 plus a tow at a dealer, and a proximity smart key at $220 to $550 mobile against $500 to $1,200 plus a tow. The full working is in our guide to car key replacement cost in Arlington.
On a Chevrolet the gap comes from the same three places it does on any make. The tow, because a vehicle with no working key cannot drive in. The appointment, because a service department books key work days out. And the scope, because a dealer quotes the key you asked for instead of checking whether the key is the fault.
The dealer is the right call for warranty work, for recall work, and when a body control module has failed and needs replacing under GM's own process.
Ownership checks, and why they are not optional
A key that starts a vehicle is a security credential, and a legitimate locksmith treats it as one. Before any key is made we match photo ID to the registration or title. The NASTF Vehicle Security Professional programme is the industry framework for access to security data, and in Texas the locksmith doing this work operates under the Texas DPS Private Security Program.
If a shop offers to program a Chevrolet key without asking who you are, that is not a convenience. It is the step the whole system depends on, skipped.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a Chevrolet car key cost in Arlington TX?
As of October 2026, a Chevrolet key cut and programmed at your vehicle in Arlington runs $160 to $520 on most models. A plain transponder key is the low end, a flip key with built-in remote sits in the middle, and a push-to-start proximity fob is the top. A spare made from a working key always costs less than replacing the last key.
Why does GM key programming take longer than other makes?
Many Chevrolets enforce a security timer before the immobiliser will accept a new key. On older systems it is a relearn made of three ten-minute cycles when no working key is present. On newer ones it is a timed wait during security access. No equipment shortens it, so an all-keys-lost Chevy visit is longer than the cutting and programming alone.
What is the difference between a Chevy flip key and a smart key?
A flip key has a blade that folds into the remote and still goes into an ignition cylinder and turns. A smart key, which GM calls a PEPS fob, stays in your pocket and the car starts with a button. The two are not interchangeable. A push-button Chevrolet cannot be started with a flip key, and a turn-key one has nowhere to use a proximity fob.
Can a locksmith program a Chevrolet key without the dealership?
Yes. Transponder keys, flip keys and proximity fobs for Chevrolet are programmed on-site in Arlington, including when every key is lost. The newest trucks and SUVs on GM's latest electrical architecture need current equipment and online security access, which we carry. The dealership is mainly needed for warranty and recall work.
Will a used Chevy key fob from online work on my car?
Often not. Many GM proximity fobs lock to the first vehicle they are programmed to and cannot simply be added to a second one. A used flip key has a better chance if the chip and frequency match, but the blade must be cut new. Send us the part number before buying and we will tell you whether it can be programmed.
My older Chevy has no chip in the key. Why won't it start?
Some older Chevrolets use PassLock, where the security sensor is inside the ignition lock cylinder instead of the key. A new key will not fix a failing PassLock sensor, because the key was never the part being checked. That is an ignition repair, and it usually shows up as a security light with an engine that starts and stalls.
How long does a Chevrolet key take to make in Arlington?
With a working key present, most Chevrolet keys are cut, programmed and tested in 20 to 45 minutes at your vehicle. With no working key, allow 60 to 90 minutes on most models because of the GM security timer. Late-model trucks and SUVs on the newest architecture can take longer, and we say so when we quote.
What does an all-keys-lost Chevrolet cost in Arlington?
On turn-key Chevrolets it typically runs $220 to $420, and on push-to-start models it typically runs $340 to $560. The higher figure reflects a different job, not a penalty. The blade is originated from vehicle data, security access is established without a working key to vouch for it, and the timed wait applies.
