Smart Key Programming — FAQ
Why is a smart key so much more expensive than a chip key?
The fob itself is more expensive ($120–$350 for the part vs $35–$80 for a basic transponder). Programming also takes longer because of rolling-code security between the fob and the car. Combined, that gives a typical $220–$550 range vs $140–$280 for a chip key.
Will an aftermarket smart key work as well as OEM?
Modern aftermarket fobs from Xhorse, KeyDIY, and OEM remanufactured stock have closed most of the quality gap. Where signal reliability or button feel matters, we recommend OEM. For a second/spare key on a 5+ year old car, aftermarket is fine and saves $80–$150.
My Tesla / EV — can you program a key card?
Tesla key cards and phone-as-key pairing are done in the touchscreen, not with a scan tool. We can pair an additional card or set up phone-as-key — no AVDI required, but the owner does need to be present with the card or phone.
My smart key suddenly stopped working — is the fob bad?
Usually it is the CR2032 coin cell battery — replace that first. If a fresh battery does not solve it, the next likely cause is fob desync (rolling code drift) which can be re-paired, then immobilizer faults which need diagnostic-tool investigation.
